Music – What I'm Listening to (2009)

I listen to a lot of music.  When we were younger, we listened to albums over and over again.  Now, the music is more like water in a stream – always running.

My favorite source for new music: Radio Paradise.  Streaming radio, hosted by Bill (a former KPIG jock) and his honey, Rebecca.  Hands down, the best radio station in the world.

Felt Forum_Doors, Live in New York (Rhino 2009) – These six discs capture the complete Felt Forum shows from Saturday, January 17 and Sunday. January 18, 1970. The Doors played four shows and each show is included in its entirety in this box set.  Some of the songs have been included on other Doors live albums.

My Lizard King collection runs deep, so I speak with some authority on live Doors material.  The early Sunday show (disc four) is my favorite in this set.  You’ll hear lots of “Morrison Hotel” songs and some “Celebration of the Lizard” material.  Jim gets noticeably sloppy during the second Sunday show, and the encore on disc six with John Sebastian (harmonica) and Dallas Taylor (drums – are you kidding me?) doesn’t do much for me.  Lovely packaging, but I’ll go for the Aquarius sets every time. coverLinda Ronstadt, King Biscuit Flower Hour (1976) – Wolfgang’s Vault has started to make live shows available for flac download as well as free streaming.  There are several nice cnocerts from Linda Ronstadt – it’s not easy to find her live shows from the 70s.  This gig from the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles is a well-recorded crowd pleaser.  (12/12/09)

NorahJones-08-bigNorah Jones, “Chasing Pirates” – I got hipped to Norah Jones a few years back when her album seemed to be play in every room at the Consumer Electronic Show.  The ever-charming Norah was kind enough to play her new album live in the studio on WFUV (Bronx) on Nov. 19, 2009.  The title track, “Chasing Pirates,” will instantly catch your ear.  (12/07/09)

RSCbrooklynFr Rosanne Cash, live performance of “The List.” Rosanne released a new album of songs that her father told her to learn.  The show was recorded on Oct. 9, 2009, at St. Ann’s Warehouse in NYC.  Listen for the achingly-beautiful cover of “500 Miles” (the Proclaimers song). (12/06/09)
